Toro y Moi to Issue Home-Recordings from June 2009 The ever-busy Toro y Moi believes firmly in keeping the releases coming. "The music industry is moving so fast, it's a business move to keep putting things things out, to keep your name out there," ol' Chazwick Bundick told me in an interview last year. True to such spirit, Bundick has a new release on the cards, in follow up to a 2011 that gave the world Underneath the Pine and the Freaking Out EP. It's called June 2009, and, as its title suggests, it's a collection of home-recordings from June of 2009, catching Bundick working at his still-fledgling project. The set will be released by Carpark on April 24, both as single CD and as 5x7" box-set. You can source a new/old track, "Pontoon," from the Toro y Moi blog, which shows the more muggy, folkie sound Bundick was working through long before he went disco. Toro y Moi is also currently on tour through Asia through February, P.S.... Yet, Jonquil's music is growing surely more 'international' in bent with each passing record; their fifth disc (although only second 'proper' album) Point of Go taking influence from all manner of straight-up pop music. Of course, "Mexico" doesn't boast Mariachi brass, just loads of synths and glinting, Vampire Weekend-y guitars, with Hugo 'Chad Valley' Manuel caroling over all the backing sunshine. "I never knew you wanted to go," Manuel falsettoes, "I said this wasn't what I wanted, no"; the pained words marked in salty, striking contrast with the super-joyous-sounding jam. PS: Point of Go is out February 21, and I'm calling Jonquil an International Pick at SXSW 2012, too... Permalink | Comment | Email this Jack White to Release Debut Solo LP in April Jack White has been involved in a lot of records over the years, but he's never made a solo LP. Now, with the demise of his popular rock'n'roll duo The White Stripes, White —Third Man czar, Raconteur, Dead Weatherman, Black Belles svengali, etc— has gone out on his lonesome. "I've put off making records under my own name for a long time but these songs feel like they could only be presented under my name," White offers, in a press-release heralding the arrival of Blunderbuss. White's wackily-titled solo debut is out April 24 via Third Man/Columbia. At the Jack White website, you can listen to the lead single "Love Interruption" for free, order its imminent seven-inch version, and grow used to the idea of John Anthony Gillis standing at the front of a stage minus a Meg at the back. Publ.Date : Sat, 04 Feb 2012 19:58:47 GMT Top 10 Tuesdays: International Acts to Watch at SXSW 2012 SXSW looms ever closer: the music portion of the almighty cluster-conference will play out March 13-18, with over 2000 acts descending on Austin, Texas, in pursuit of buzz, beer, and barbecue. Whilst the great majority of those acts are from North America, over 500+ will be winging their way from over the seas; some, even, from far-flung locales. And, after beginning the SXSW recommendin' with a tight Bands to Watch rundown, it's time to cast our net wider. To México. To Colombia. To Chile. Argentina. Australia. England. And, of course, Sweden; eternal home of the greatest pop in the world (like, say, Niki and the Dove (pictured!)). From around the globe unto Austin's doorstep, here's a world of wondrous alt sound served up in friendly list form: 10 International Acts to Watch at SXSW 2012... Now, with second record Nootropics, the story is 'band gets tight.' Building from the rollicking momentum of the awesome single "Batman," Lower Dens have been barreling further into hypnotic repetition and instrumental chemistry. The five lock-groove minutes of lead single "Brains" come with krautrock comparisons inbuilt: the Baltimore-based band rolling out down some unending audio autobahn, highway lines flickering beneath the maw of their chugging rock'n'roll engine. Both lyrically and compositionally, the jam picks up on the preoccupations of Nootropics, which are concerned with the interfacing between the human body and increasingly-intuitive technologies; the brain of its title the organ forever in-between our fleshy origins and the increasingly-digitized culture surrounding said corporeal form.
